The Brief

Alabama’s prisons siphon more than half a billion tax dollars every year, yet it can be difficult to know what goes on inside.

WBHM created the Deliberate Indifference podcast to detail the inner workings of one of America's most corrupt prison systems. This partnering website hosted the podcast and allowed listeners to dive deeper into each episode through articles and other resources.

Approach

Created for all major streaming platforms.

Working with WBHM’s Mary Scott Hodgin, the host of Deliberate Indifference, a unique graphic style for the podcast was developed. This included photography styles, icons, album art and more.

The website design and build were kept simple and easy to use. Taking a reportage approach, each episode of the podcast is hosted on the site and fed to all major podcasting platforms.

The report said “Alabama is incarcerating prisoners under conditions that pose a substantial risk of serious harm” and “Alabama is deliberately indifferent to that harm.”
